Do These Four Things Right Now

1. Power it off. Not sleep — fully off. Electricity plus water is what destroys the board.
2. Do not plug it in. Not to charge, not to a computer, not to check if it works.
3. Dry the outside and hold it port-down. Let gravity drain what it can. Do not shake it.

Please Do Not Put It in Rice

This is the single most common thing that turns a saveable phone into a dead one. Rice does not pull water out of a sealed device in any meaningful way. What it does do is buy time — and time is exactly what you cannot afford, because the real damage is not the water. It is corrosion.

Water carries minerals and salts. When it dries on a circuit board it leaves those behind, and they keep eating at the connections for days afterwards. A phone that seems fine on day one can fail on day four for exactly this reason. Cleaning that residue off properly is the actual repair, and every hour it sits in a bag of rice is an hour the corrosion is spreading. Apple even said publicly in 2024 that rice is not the answer.

Water Resistant Does Not Mean Waterproof

Modern iPhones carry an IP68 rating, and people reasonably assume that means a pool is fine. Two things it does not account for. The rating is achieved with fresh water in a lab, and pool chlorine, salt water and lake water are all considerably harsher. And the seals degrade — an iPhone that has been dropped, or has had a screen replaced, or is simply three years old, does not seal like it did on day one.

This is Florida, so most of what we see is pool water, lake water, and phones caught in an afternoon storm. Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage in any case, which is why the sensor inside turning red matters to them and not to us.

Signs of Liquid Damage

• Will not power on, or boots then shuts off
• Screen has lines, blotches, discolouration or a dark patch spreading
• Speaker or microphone sounds muffled, or callers cannot hear you
• It says liquid detected in the connector and will not charge
• Battery drains far faster than it should, or the phone runs hot
• Camera images look foggy — condensation behind the lens
• Buttons or touch respond intermittently

What We Actually Do

We open the phone, disconnect the battery to stop any current flowing, and clean the corrosion off the board and the connectors. Then we test what survived and replace what did not — commonly the battery, the charging port assembly or the screen. The free assessment comes first, so you know what you are looking at before you spend anything.

The Honest Part

Water damage is the one repair nobody can promise. It depends on what liquid it was, how long it sat, and whether anyone tried to power it up in between. Some phones come back completely. Some come back long enough to get your photos and contacts off, which for a lot of people is the thing that actually mattered. Some do not come back at all.
